About Us
GirlsCANCompute is a non-profit organisation with the aim of cultivating the next generation of computation-loving girls, regardless of their background or past experiences. We offer free classes in community centres, where students explore the fields of math and computational linguistics through preparation for national and international contests and interactive discussions.
Our organisation is based in Vancouver, Canada, where relatively few girls appear to take part in computational contests, most likely due to a lack of exposure at a young age. GirlsCANCompute hopes to help to fill in this gap and inspire girls to dive into the fascinating world of problem solving. Whether students join the program to improve contest performance or deepen their understanding of unique concepts, they will receive engaging classes taught by motivated high school students with vast experience.
Meet the Team
Cynthia Zhang
CEO & Instructor
Cynthia is a high school student at Crofton House School. Before moving to Canada, she was born in Beijing, China, and through her education there, was exposed to more advanced math material. In her free time, Cynthia enjoys playing golf, piano, and unfrequently playing ultimate frisbee with her friends. She has experience in both international and Canadian math competitions, including Canada Jay Competition (Canadian Champion), University of Waterloo Galois Contest (Distinction), University of Waterloo Cayley Contest (Honour Roll) and AMC (AIME Qualifier with Distinction).
Yoyo Zhang
Lead Content Developer & Instructor
Yoyo is a high school student at Crofton House School. Before moving to Vancouver, she studied at World Foreign Language Academy (WFLA) in Shanghai, China, where she was first exposed to math competitions. Outside of math, you can find Yoyo playing tennis or attempting to bake. She has experience in both international and Canadian math competitions, including University of Waterloo Fryer Contest (Distinction), University of Waterloo Pascal Contest (Distinction) and AMC.
Maggie Wang
Instructor
Maggie is a high school student at Crofton House School. She was born in Vancouver, Canada, where she was first introduced to math competitions. In her free time, Maggie enjoys origami, crocheting, and baking. She has experience in both international and Canadian math competitions, including Canada Lynx Mathematical Competition (Honourable Mention, BC), University of Waterloo Fryer Contest (Distinction), University of Waterloo Pascal Contest (Distinction) and AMC.

Sophia Behar (Founder)
CEO & Instructor, 2024-2026
Sophia is a high school student at Crofton House School who has always loved math, computer science and languages (of which she speaks English, French, Mandarin and some Spanish). Before moving to Vancouver, she was raised in Singapore, where she was able to explore all these topics in great depth. In her free time, you can find Sophia practising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, playing tennis or debating interesting topics. Her experience in math competitions includes: AMC (USAMO Qualifier), University of Waterloo Galois Contest (Honour Roll), University of Waterloo Fermat Contest (Honour Roll) and Canada Lynx Competition (Bronze Award, BC). She has also qualified for the Invitational Round of the NACLO competition, where she scored among the top 10 participants in Canada.
Jesie Yan
Lead Content Developer & Instructor, 2024-2026
Jesie is a high school student at Crofton House School. Before moving to Vancouver, she was born and raised in Hong Kong, where she was first introduced to competition math while studying at Diocesan Girls' School (DGS). In her free time, Jesie enjoys playing the piano, practising badminton, knitting and reading. She has experience in international and Canadian math competitions, including: Canada Lynx Competition (Honourable Mention, Vancouver), University of Waterloo Cayley Contest (Distinction), Canada Jay Competition (Bronze Award, Vancouver) and AMC.
